Explore West Central Saskatchewan....the heart of the old North West

Go back in time to the place of ancient tipi rings and medicine wheels, major fur trade routes and the signing of Indian treaties. From Métis culture and the first capital of the Northwest Territories to the clash of the forces in the North West Rebellion, this is the heart of a rich and fascinating heritage.

Head to Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where 6,000-year-old archaeological sites have been unearthed, and where you can experience contemporary Plains Indian culture. At Herschel, Indian rock carvings and tipi rings speak of ancient mysteries.

This is also the land of Louis Riel, who led his Métis people in an armed uprising against the Canadian government in 1885. Batoche National Historic Site preserves the memory of Riel and his cause. Other museums and historic sites in many communities take you back to days when Plains Indians used stone tools, settlers lived in sod houses and blacksmiths pounded red-hot iron.

Multicultural heritage is especially rich in the region. Indian and Métis history, French Culture, the story of Mennonite settlements and the Doukhobour heritage are all very much alive in our communities. This is shown through the many community events held throughout West Central Saskatchewan. To see details on events in the region, visit our online Events Calendar, then plan to be there!
